Enjoying Exquisite Zunda Mochi in Sendai

Zunda Saryo Inside Sendai Station

I visited Zunda Saryo located inside Sendai Station. A “saryo” is a place where tea ceremonies are held, essentially like a traditional tea house or café. This shop also offers takeout service and had a line of customers when I visited. It is especially popular among tourists.

Mildly Sweet Zunda Mochi

This time, I tried their zunda mochi. At first glance, it looked very sweet, but in reality, the sweetness was quite mild. The mochi was generously topped with zunda, yet the flavor was light enough that I could have eaten several without getting tired of it. The combination of the rich flavor of the zunda and the soft mochi was perfect, and the texture made it an enjoyable treat. Zunda, made by grinding edamame, is known for its rich flavor and subtle sweetness, making it both delightful and somewhat healthy.

Flavor Variation with Salted Kombu and Black Soybean Tea

To ensure the taste does not become monotonous, the zunda mochi is served with salted kombu as a palate cleanser, along with black soybean tea. This balance allows you to savor the dessert to the last bite.

The History of Kasho Sanzen

The zunda mochi is provided by Kasho Sanzen, a company founded in 1947 (Showa 22), with a history spanning over 75 years dedicated to crafting confections that satisfy customers. This company is also famous for creating the Sendai specialty, “Hagi no Tsuki,” and sells around 100 different types of Japanese and Western-style confections in stores across Miyagi Prefecture and nationwide. The company name “Sanzen” is derived from the aim of achieving “three perfections”: customer service, creating a joyful workplace, and sound management.

A Must-Try When Visiting Sendai

For many, Sendai brings to mind both “Hagi no Tsuki” and “zunda mochi,” and it is surprising that both are made by the same company.

It’s an ideal spot to visit when you have a little time before boarding the Shinkansen or heading to the airport. If you ever have the chance to visit Sendai Station, be sure to stop by and try it for yourself.
