Experiencing the Atmosphere of YOSAKOI 2024 and Festival Vibes at Kotodai Park, Sendai

YOSAKOI 2024 at Kotodai Park was an event I had been looking forward to, but unfortunately, due to other commitments, I couldn’t stay to watch the performances or even enjoy the food. Still, I was amazed by the sheer number of food stalls lining the park. From yakisoba and takoyaki to more modern options like tacos and spare ribs, the variety of festival food was overwhelming. If my schedule had allowed, I would have loved to sample everything. There were also plenty of beverages—both alcoholic and non-alcoholic—to round out the meal, which would have been the perfect way to cap off a day at the festival.

Even without the performances or food, the energy of Yosakoi was palpable throughout the park.

What is Yosakoi?
Yosakoi originated in 1954 in Kochi Prefecture as part of efforts to revitalize the post-war economy and bring communities together. The name “Yosakoi” comes from the Kochi dialect, meaning “Come at night.” One of the key features of Yosakoi is the naruko, a small wooden clapper held by dancers as they perform dynamic, energetic routines in teams, creating a spectacular fusion of rhythm and movement. It’s a unique cultural tradition that has spread joy and unity throughout Japan.

For a glimpse into the dynamic nature of Yosakoi, check out these posts on X (formerly Twitter), where you can see some of the performances from this year’s festival: Post 1 and Post 2. These links capture the energy and vibrancy that define Yosakoi, something I hope to witness live next year.

Michinoku YOSAKOI Festival in Sendai
Sendai hosts the Michinoku YOSAKOI Festival, which started in 1998. This festival blends Yosakoi with the traditional culture and folk music of the Tohoku region, creating something uniquely Sendai. Held every October, teams from all over Japan come together to perform vibrant dances at venues like Kotodai Park and Jozenji Street. The festival not only breathes life into the local economy but also serves as a proud representation of Tohoku’s rich cultural heritage.

Why Yosakoi Has Spread Nationwide
Yosakoi’s nationwide spread can be attributed to the success of Hokkaido’s YOSAKOI Soran Festival, which blends Yosakoi with the local Soran folk music. The adaptability of Yosakoi—incorporating regional traditions—made it popular across Japan. Its inclusiveness, allowing anyone to participate, combined with its value in boosting local tourism and economies, has helped Yosakoi thrive.

Even though I didn’t get the chance to try the food or see the dances, the spirit of Yosakoi was unmistakable throughout the park. The atmosphere was filled with energy, and I can only imagine how incredible it must have been to watch the performances. Next time, I’ll make sure to plan better and fully enjoy both the food and the dances.

Sendai is at the perfect gateway to autumn right now. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and the low humidity makes it a delight to be outdoors. I had a wonderful time soaking in the festival atmosphere.

Next year’s YOSAKOI is sure to be another fantastic event. Hopefully, I’ll be able to enjoy the dances and feast on some amazing festival food then!
